Таких протестов было четыре в тот год с крупным ($800,000) ущербом для собственности. Применялось огнестрельное оружие, был (один?) погибший. К югу от кампуса Беркли Рейган даже построил что-то типа своей собственной Берлинской стены за один день. Как бы то ни было, в своей последующей речи Рейган обратился к студентам с примирительной речью, которая очень сильно напоминает один из недавних (середина 2021 года) монологов комедианта-ведущего Билла Маара из передачи Real time with Bill Maher (см. ссылку ниже).
«The leaders of the takeover of this property have made it plain clear their only purpose was political. They were challenging the right of private ownership of land in this country. The followers were mostly well-meaning students alienated by the culture and practices of a large university. They wanted to learn from the great minds of the age but found themselves in oversized courses conducted by teaching assistants. The feeling comes that they are nameless, faceless numbers on a assembly line – green cap at one end and cap, gown and automated diploma at the other. They want someone to know they are there - they aren’t ever missed and recorded as absent when they aren’t there. The majority of faculty are scholars too busy with their own research and writing».
Как мы видим, Билл Маар не открыл Америку своим монологом. Он пересказал своими словами обвинения Рейгана, добавив комедийный элемент. В 2021 году повторяется тема из 1969 года. 52 года прошло. Наверно на какой-нибудь древнеегипетской стеле 4000 лет назад выбили нечто похожее про то, что «молодежь отчуждается в процессе некачественного образования и дерзит старшим жрецам». Другими словами, можно предполагать, что описанные Мааром проблемы в университетах это не какое-то временное негативное явление, а эндемичное. Этот рак неизлечим, хирургическое вмешательство бесполезно и может убить пациента, требуется искать паллиативные нерезкие меры.
Также возникает подозрение, что Пинк Флойд украл идею для своей песни «Another brick in the wall» у Рейгана.
